La Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja UTPL canceló el I Encuentro Nacional de Periodistas y Comunicadores, que tendría lugar en la ciudad de Loja, por considerar que no se podía “asegurar una posición neutra del evento, organizado por un grupo de corresponsales de medios nacionales de esa ciudad”.
El evento, que tenía previsto realizarse el 22 de junio en las instalaciones universitarias, había sido confirmado, sin embargo a última hora fue cancelado. El periodista Karlos Andrade, uno de los organizadores, aseguró que por fuentes confiables el hecho se debió a una llamada del Secretario de Comunicación, Patricio Barriga, quien habría advertido a la Universidad sobre el evento y que deben mantener las buenas relaciones.
“Conozco de buena fuente que a Quito llega una alerta que sale desde la Gobernación de la Provincia que manifiesta que en Loja se está confabulando una reunión con periodistas opositores al gobierno. Esto me confirmó un abogado de la universidad, quien me comentó que llamó Patricio Barriga, quien habría señalado que no vale que la universidad se ponga en problemas ahora que han tenido una relación de cordialidad”, apuntó Andrade.
La decisión de la no realización del evento fue comunicada a los organizadores a través de un correo suscrito por Elva Herrero Fernández directora General de Relaciones Interinstitucionales encargada, el pasado 13 de junio, quien escribió: “La solicitud, una vez nos hizo llegar el pasado jueves, fue revisada por diversas instancias y tras esta revisión fue objeto de una reunión para determinar la viabilidad de celebración del mismo. En primer lugar, y como ya le di a conocer, eventos y actividades académicas previamente coordinadas dificultan la celebración del Encuentro para el día asignado. Aparte de esto, y lo más relevante, la propuesta de evento fue revisada desde otras perspectivas concluyendo que no podemos asegurar una posición neutra de la Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja en el desarrollo del evento, un principio que rige y debe regir todo nuestro quehacer universitario”.
Andrade comentó estar sorprendido con la decisión puesto que antes, en un correo enviado el 10 de junio, Herrero les había reconfirmado la disponibilidad para realizar el evento en el Centro de Convenciones de la UTPL. Además de eso, en el mismo correo, Herrero citó a los organizadores a una reunión de trabajo para el martes 14 de junio para coordinar la logística y “garantizar un evento exitoso”. Además de este hecho, Andrade denunció que el 16 de junio Facebook les bloqueó la página creada para el encuentro y desde su perfil personal escribió el siguiente mensaje: “Es terrible la desesperación de ciertas autoridades, si en Loja nos vamos a reunir Periodistas, Comunicadores, Productores, Docentes, Estudiantes y Ciudadanía, no somos terroristas. a que tienen miedo. no era necesario cerrar nuestra pagina de facebook. «Encuentro Periodismo Loja» volveremos a crear otra cuenta las veces que sea necesario y listo”. El periodista cuestionó la censura de la Universidad al impedir la realización del encuentro y aseguró que pese a no tener lugar, van a realizarlo “sea como sea”.
Fundamedios se contactó con el secretario de comunicación, Patricio Barriga, quien aseguró que él no tiene injerencia alguna en las decisiones que tome una universidad autónoma como la UTPL, por lo que mencionó que eso deberían responder las autoridades del centro educativo.
University cancels journalists’ event they denounce censorship because of pressure by Communications Secretary
The Private Technical University of Loja – UTPL canceled the First National Meeting of Journalists and Communicators, to be held in the city of Loja, on the grounds that it was impossible to «ensure a neutral position of the event, organized by a group of correspondents of national media in that city«.
The event, which was scheduled to be held on 22 June in the university’s facilities, had been confirmed, but was canceled at the last minute. Journalist Karlos Andrade, one of the organizers, stated he had been informed by reliable sources that the cancellation had come in response to a call from the Communications Secretary, Patricio Barriga, who reportedly warned the university about the event and the need to maintain good relations.
«I know from a good source that Quito received an alert issued by the Provincial Government stating that in Loja there was a conspiracy to hold a meeting of journalists who oppose the government. This was confirmed by a university lawyer, who told me that Patricio Barriga called to say that it was not worth for the university to get into trouble when they have been maintaining a cordial relationship», said Andrade.
The decision to cancel the event was communicated to the organizers through an email signed by Elva Herrero Fernández, General Director of Inter-Institutional Relations, on 13 June. She wrote: «The request sent to us last Thursday was reviewed by several instances and after this review it was the subject of a meeting to determine the feasibility of holding the event. Firstly, and as I already informed you, previously organized events and academic activities make it difficult to hold the Meeting on the day assigned. Apart from this, and most importantly, the proposed event was reviewed from other perspectives leading us to conclude that the Private Technical University of Loja cannot ensure a neutral position in the development of the event, a guiding principle that governs and should govern all our university activities».
Andrade said he was surprised by the decision as earlier, in an email sent on 10 June, Herrero had reconfirmed the availability of the UPTL Convention Center for the event. Also, in that same email, Herrero called the organizers to a working meeting to be held on Tuesday 14 June to coordinate the logistics and «ensure a successful event». In addition to this, Andrade reported that on 16 June Facebook blocked the page created for the Meeting. He wrote the following message in his personal account: «The despair of certain authorities is terrible, those who are meeting in Loja are Journalists, Communicators, Producers, Teachers, Students and Citizens, we are not terrorists. What are they afraid of. It was not necessary to close our Facebook page ‘Journalism Meeting Loja’, we will create another account as often as necessary and that’s it». The journalist questioned the University’s censorship by preventing the holding of the Meeting and said that they will carry it out «whatever it takes» despite not having where to do it.
Fundamedios contacted the communications secretary, Patricio Barriga, who said he has no say in the decisions taken by an autonomous university such as the UTPL, and mentioned that the educational center’s authorities should respond.
