El 16 de abril de 2015 la Fiscalía General del Estado citó a Carlos Pérez Guartambel, líder indígena y presidente de la organización Ecuarunari, a rendir su versión dentro de una investigación que se inició por el supuesto delito de tentativa de golpe de Estado contra el gobierno del presidente Rafael Correa, por los hechos ocurridos el 30 de septiembre de 2010.
En el documento enviado por la Fiscalía se asegura que la indagación previa se inició a partir de una denuncia presentada por la exasambleísta del partido de gobierno, Irina Cabezas para descubrir autores o cómplices en este hecho denunciado. Dentro de esa convocatoria también se solicitó la comparecencia de Pacha Cabascango, Patricio Zhingre y Ascencio Farinango miembros de la Ecuarunari, quienes, junto a Pérez, deberán acudir el 16 de abril a dar su versión.
En diálogo con Fundamedios, el líder indígena denunció que con este acto se pretende involucrar a la organización que preside en un proceso por tentativa de golpe de Estado con el fin de amedrentarlos y amilanarlos por el simple hecho de defender los derechos de la naturaleza .
En ese sentido, Pérez denunció que se trata de una persecución política contra las cabezas más visibles de la organización indígena y denunció que desde hace un año han venido sufriendo actos de hostigamiento, al ser vigilados constantemente por supuestos agentes estatales.
En una rueda de prensa desarrollada en días pasados, Pérez señaló que el movimiento indígena no tuvo nada que ver con la revuelta policial, y como ejemplo, informó de las actividades que él realizó en ese día.
Prosecutor investigates indigenous leader for “coup attempt”
On April 16th, 2015, the Attorney General summoned Carlos Pérez Guartambel, indigenous leader and president of the organization “Ecuarunari,” to give his version of the facts as part of an investigation initiated into the alleged offense of an attempted coup against the government of President Rafael Correa, after the events of September 30th, 2010.
The document sent by the Prosecutor states that the initial inquiry began after a denouncement presented by Irina Cabezas, former Assembly member of Correa's party, in order to discover perpetrators or accomplices involved in the act. Within this convocation, the appearance of Pacha Cabascango, Patricio Zhingre, y Ascencio Farinango was also solicited, members of Ecuarunari who, together with Pérez, must appear on April 16th to give their version.
Speaking to Fundamedios, the indigenous leader denounced this act, stating that it aims to involve his organization in a case for an attempted coup in order to intimidate and deter them, because of the simple fact that it has defended the rights of nature.
Pérez denounced that this is about the political persecution of the most visible members of the indigenous organization, and that since a year ago they have been suffering harassment, constantly monitored by alleged state agents.
In a press conference, Pérez stated that the indigenous movement had nothing to do with the police revolt, and to illustrate, he shared the activities that had been carried out by the group on that day.
