La noche del miércoles 17 de junio de 2015, la página web del diario El Comercio www.elcomercio.com fue víctima de un ataque cibernético que lo dejó fuera del aire durante al menos dos horas, mientras transmitía en vivo las protestas ciudadanas en Quito.
Según denunció el medio de comunicación, el ataque ocurrió entre las 20:13 y 21:50, hora en la que se logró restablecer la página. Según el rotativo, la operadora privada a cargo del servicio de Sistema de Nombres de Dominio (DNS) informó que la causa de la suspensión del servicio fue una saturación de distintos equipos por ataques externos, originados desde una interconexión internacional, lo que se conoce como un ataque de denegación de servicios .
Diario El Comercio denunció que la intromisión “impactó nuestro trabajo en la actualización de noticias, en la transmisión en vivo y, sobre todo, en el derecho de nuestros lectores a recibir información de forma oportuna y con independencia editorial”.
Según el medio, esta no es la primera vez en este mes que el sitio web del diario ha tenido intermitencias, asimismo, por razones externas. En estas últimos dos semanas, Fundamedios ha reportado ataques de este tipo, no solo a la página de El Comercio, sino también a la del medio digital LaRepública.ec, Teleamazonas, Ecuavisa, revista Vistazo, revista Estadio, ocurridas en el contexto de las protestas ciudadanas contra algunas políticas del gobierno.
Newspaper's web portal suffered cyber-attack as it broadcasted protests
On the evening of Wednesday 17 June 2015, the website of the newspaper El Comercio www.elcomercio.com was the victim of a cyber-attack that left it off the air for at least two hours, as it broadcasted live public protests in Quito.
The media outlet reported that the attack took place between 20:13 and 21:50, when it was possible to restore the website. According to the newspaper, the private operator in charge of the Domain Name System (DNS) reported that the cause of the suspension of service was the saturation of different equipment due to external attacks, originating from an international network, i.e. what is known as a denial of service attack.
El Comercio reported that the interruption "impacted our work updating news, broadcasting live and, above all, the right of our readers to receive editorially independent information in a timely manner".
According to the newspaper, this is not the first time this month that the newspaper's website has suffered from occasional suspensions of service, also due to external reasons. During the last two weeks, Fundamedios has reported attacks of this kind not only against the page of El Comercio, but also against the digital outlet LaRepública.ec, Teleamazonas, Ecuavisa, Vistazo magazine and Estadio magazine, occurred in the context of public protests against some government policies.
