Telmo Pacheco, presidente de la Asociación de Familiares y Amigos de Desaparecidos (Asfadec) y José Rodríguez, miembro de dicha organización, fueron intimidados y agredidos físicamente por cinco personas, identificados como simpatizantes del partido de gobierno Alianza PAÍS. El hecho ocurrió al mediodía del 30 de junio, tras concluir un plantón que hicieron fuera del Palacio de Gobierno, en donde se llevó a cabo una reunión entre el presidente Rafael Correa y algunos familiares de desaparecidos a la que Pacheco y otras personas no fueron invitadas.
En diálogo con Fundamedios, Pacheco narró que la agresión ocurrió en las calles García Moreno y Mejía, en el centro histórico de Quito, cuando se dirigía a su casa para guardar los carteles, megáfonos y demás material utilizado en el plantón. Los simpatizantes del partido de gobierno empezaron a intimidarlos con gritos como: “borregos”, “politiqueros”. Tras esto, aseguró que una mujer corpulenta abordó a Rodríguez por la espalda, lo pateó y tiró al suelo. “En ese momento intenté intervenir y vinieron otras personas a atacarme a mí, me dieron golpes y yo tuve que resguardarme en un comisariato”, apuntó Pacheco. Además de esta agresión, denunció que en la mañana del 1 de julio, su compañero Ítalo Salazar, otro miembro de la organización fue agredido. A Salazar lo abordaron cuatro hombres mientras se dirigía a una entrevista y le dijeron: “Ah tú eres del grupo de ayer”.
Pese a estas agresiones, el presidente de Asfadec dijo que continuarán con su lucha. “Nosotros vamos a continuar porque sabemos que esta es la única forma para que esto cambie y que no le pase a nadie”. En ese sentido agregó que exigirán ser escuchados y que se investigue por igual no solo los 97 casos presentados por el Ministerio del Interior, sino los más de 1714 casos que, según la asociación, fueron puestos en conocimiento a la Fiscalía.
Members of association of relatives of missing people are attacked and intimidated by government supporters
Telmo Pacheco, president of the Association of Relatives and Friends of Disappeared Persons (Asfadec) and José Rodríguez, a member of that organization, were intimidated and physically attacked by five people identified as supporters of the ruling party Alianza PAIS. The incident took place at midday on 30 June, after a protest outside the Government Palace, where a meeting was held between President Rafael Correa and some relatives of missing persons to which Pacheco and others were not invited.
Talking with Fundamedios, Pacheco said the attack occurred in streets García Moreno and Mejía, in the historic center of Quito, as he headed home to put away the posters, megaphones and other material used in the protest. The supporters of the ruling party began to intimidate them shouting: "sheep" and "intriguers". Then, a heavyset woman approached Rodríguez from behind, kicked him and knocked him down. "I tried to intervene but others came to attack me, I was beaten and I had to take shelter in an office", said Pacheco. In addition to this aggression, he reported that on the morning of 1 July, his colleague Ítalo Salazar, another member of the organization, was also attacked. Salazar was approached by four men as he went for an interview who said to him: "Hey, you're part of yesterday's group".
Despite these attacks, the president of Asfadec said they will continue with their struggle. "We will continue because we know that this is the only way that this will change and that it does not happen to anyone". He added that they will demand to be heard and that every case is investigated, not only the 97 cases filed by the Interior Ministry, but the more than 1,714 cases that, according to the association, have been made known to the Prosecutor's Office.
